Amber's Close Call

Earlier this week we showed you some of the highlights of Alicia's path to the 2010 WSU J-Cup trophy. Ed Darcey was at last week's event and reports today on how very close G.L.O.R.Y. Girl Amber O'Neal came to winning it all...

While earlier in the week we saw how successful one of the original stars of WSU, Alicia, had been in winning both the J-Cup and King & Queen of the Ring tournaments--and in the process assuring herself of a June title match with reigning WSU Women's Champion Mercedes Martinez--the bout almost had different participants. Previously undefeated in WSU, Amber O'Neal went toe-to-toe with Ms. Martinez and almost had the title in her grasp. At one point Mercedes, who had accidentally knocked the referee senseless, was pinned by the North Carolinian grappler for more than the three count. But with no referee to count the pin was not viable. After recovering, Martinez craftily avoided the Amber Alert (which O'Neal had used to pin her previous opponents) and got the win over the blonde G.L.O.R.Y. Girl with her own fisherman buster finisher.

While Alicia, by virtue of her previous reign as champion and her very successful weekend, is the most obvious #1 contender and worthy adversary for Mercedes' title, one would hope that coming so close to the gold would earn O'Neal another title shot in the near future. But that seems unlikely as Amber has fallen to #8 in the WSU rankings. A rather precipitous drop for a former #1 contender who was just moments away from the championship!
